Radioembolization (Y90)
Advanced treatment delivering radioactive microspheres directly to a liver tumour through its blood vessels.
What is this procedure?
Yttrium-90 radioembolisation uses very fine radioactive microspheres injected via a catheter directly into tumour vessels. The microspheres lodge inside the tumour and emit targeted therapeutic radiation for days while surrounding tissue remains safe.
How the procedure works
Before
- An initial mapping procedure is essential before treatment
- Specific fasting protocol required
- Certain medications must be stopped
During
- Procedure under full medical supervision in a specialised radiology unit
- Microsphere injection via arterial catheter
- Radiation level monitoring during the procedure
After & Recovery
- Short stay for monitoring
- Special instructions to limit radiation exposure for family members
- Regular imaging follow-up
Who is this for?
- Advanced primary liver tumours
- Multiple liver metastases
- Patients partially responding to other treatments
Suitability is confirmed after a full clinical assessment — this information does not replace a medical consultation.
