A tissue sample is taken from a suspicious breast lump or area using a fine needle guided by ultrasound or mammography, to accurately characterize it before any treatment decision.

How the procedure works
Before
- Bring mammogram or ultrasound images
- Stop blood thinners if applicable
- Fasting usually not required
During
- Local anesthesia
- Guidance by ultrasound or mammography
- Core needle sampling, 20–30 minutes
After & Recovery
- Cold compress and light pressure on the site
- Avoid exertion for the rest of the day
- Results in about a week
